We've just spent 3 days in Cambridge. I picked up Bill Brysons book Down Under from the book shelf of the house we were staying at and read it. It's a damn fine read. Interesting and thoughful and pretty funny in places. However, I noticed some way through the 3rd chapter that he uses the word "arrestingly" far more often than I've ever heard the word used before in my entire life. In the end I noticed he'd used it at least once in every chapter of the book. It started to irk me once I'd noticed it. Find anpther word man! It was getting boring.
I couldn't help but think of Michael Laws book The Demon Profession. He used the word quixotic half way through the book. I'd never ever heard that word used in a sentence before, much less read it in a book. I had to go look it up to see what it meant even. But bugger me if before the end of the book he hadn't used it once more.
The photo is from the excellent Hamilton Gardens. If you are in Hamilton, stop by and seen them, It's worth the time out of your trip!
