Today was the day that I was supposed to leave Madison, Wisconsin to head home to Godz Own Country, New Zealand, which really is the greatest country on earth, with the obvious exception of the USA.
I arrived nice and early at Dane County Airport only to find an abnormally long queue at the United Express check in. Ominously, the check-in geeks where all on the phone. Let me tell you that is not a good sign. After queueing for nearly an hour and a half, I find that I have shit show in hell in getting home today and a really good chance of being stranded in Podunk, USA if I get on a plane. I opt for the much better choice of staying in Madison, WI for another night.
So I can't get to NZ today, so I ask the check in geek to rebook all my flights for the following day. He obliges cheerfully. Thankfully at this point Nigel turns up at the airport, ready to drive me clear to San Francisco (from Wisconsin) at a moments notice. I respectfully decline, but accept a ride back to the office in Monona.
Being the travel paranoid geek I am, I email the best travel agents in Auckland to make sure I am good to get home tomorrow. Kelly at Accent on Travel (no website, so no link) confirms I'm good to San Fransisco, but that the check in geek didn't rebook me for the trip to Auckland. Bloody Hell. She sorts that cluster-fuck out for me. Thanks Kelly. I'm good to go now.
So toight, I'm in a hotel, waiting for tomorrow, to start my 25 hour journey all over again. If you have an imaginary friend, pray that Chicago Ohare is all good tomorrow and that I can get home to my NZ family, who (or whom) I love very much and missing like hell.
