What's with the oranges?

What's with the oranges?

I played hockey (field hockey for you Americans) when I was a kid. At half time, one of the parents would rush out with a bag of oranges all cut up nicely into quarters (wedges, segments, sectors, surely there is a mathematical name for a quartered orange) and all us kids would scoff as many as we could and then run back out onto the field.

I was a fullback, on a team of pretty good players, so I used to stand down my end of the field waiting for the game to turn so that I got to play defence. I would stand there wondering what the hell the orange was supposed to be doing. I couldn't feel the vitamin C coursing in my veins. I didn't feel stronger or revived anything else. For the most part all I felt was sticky!

But they are still dragging out the oranges at half time at the kids netball games. Ali and Sarah don't look any different after a dose of orange. Maybe we feed our kids half time oranges because thats what we did when we were kids.

I wonder if the Packers or the All Blacks have orange at half time?
