Before we start, here is the definition of the word cobber, just in case you're not familiar with it, or are American.

Being the excellent father that I am, I made a brief attempt at helping Alice with her RE (Religious Education) homework tonight.

Not that I am at all qualified to help with anything religious, but the daughter's education is important so I'm willing every now and then to have an imaginary friend.

Anyway, back to the homework. She had a crossword puzzle to complete where all the answers were of a religious bent. As you'd expect I suppose.

She was stuck on 1 across. The clue was John the Baptist was Jesus' _ _ _ _ _ _ . There was 2 letters completed so the answer was C O _ _ _ _.

I thought about it for a minute and decided the answer was COBBER. So I said it out loud. Alice just looked at me odd. Gabba voiced an opinion that that wasn't the answer at all (what would she know?). I couldn't think of anything else it could be. So COBBER it was and off I walked, feeling pleased with myself that I had helped the daughter with her homework.

UPDATE: Mrs Hoskins got wind of this story, by way of the Vodafone God, and provided the answer before I could post this story. See her response on yesterdays post about New Zealand Dotterel's tasting like chicken. So the answer was COUSIN. I reckon either one of us could be right! And I reckon she had to ask one of her kids too ;-)

The Photo

I was learning some new potatoshop techniques tonight on a random photo selected from my trash folder. Specifically Layer Masks and Adjustment Layers. After fiddling with the photo for an hour and a half, I decided that much effort deserved to be posted. I'm buggered if I can figure out how I got that odd glow between the ground and the sky. Don't know how to remove it either...

  • OK - Mrs Hoskins has got a confession to make...........Yes, you're right she did indeed have to resort to asking one of her children the correct answer!!

  • That glow you referred to is called a halo, and is often the result of a combination of sharpening and contrast adjustment, where the A.I. in potatoshop (or other image editing software) uses edge detection using brightness and gamma differences to deliniate between the areas of high and low contrast and/or brightness. Using a built-in feathering alogrithm, the software can sometimescreate a shift in the edge when sharpening occurs. I just made all that up.
